Average review score:

A vivid, superbly organized and presented primary source
Compiled, edited and Annotated by Mary J. Straw Cook, Immortal Summer: A Victorian Woman's Travels In The Southwest is a collection of letters and black-and-white photographs by Amelia Hollenback, a Victorian woman who had the opportunity to see 1897 America with her own eyes. With extensive contextual annotation, Immortal Summer is a vivid, superbly organized and presented primary source which takes in what American life, land and people were really like more than a century ago. One curious note: Author and historian Mary Cook lives in Santa Fe in the very house that Amelia Hollenback commissioned John Gaw Meem to build in 1932!

The Journals of the Lewis & Clark Expedition: The Journal of Patrick Gass, May 14, 1804-September 23, 1806 (Journals of Lewis and Clark Expedition, Vol 10)

Authors: Meriwether Lewis, Patrick Gass, William Clark, Gary E. Moulton, Thomas W. Dunlay, University of Nebraska--Lincoln Center for Great Plains Studies, American Philosophical Society, and Gary Moulton

Your credits for editorship and contribution are in error
To cite Meriwether Lewis as Editor of this and other volumes of this University of Nebraska Press edition, edited by Moulton, is an injustice to Moulton. Lewis' efforts never got beyond a pros- pectus. Further, to list Clark as merely a con- tributor, is unforgiveable.

Journey into the Rainforest
Published in Hardcover by Oxford Univ Pr Childrens Books (August, 2001)
Authors: Tim Knight, Juan Pablo Moreiras, and Linda Pitkin
Average review score:

Good generic overview of the rainforest
This is a beautifully done book. Readers are incorporated into a journey into the rainforest where they learn about preparations for the trip, human activities and life in the area, rainfall, life in the different areas of the rainforest, terms, adaptations of plants and animals and more.

This book is a good introduction for younger readers and is a refreshing change from some of the other works that outline specific areas of the rainforest (like the layers) and rant and rave about loss of biodiversity.

Although the book touches on the important points it provides a good introductory overview and introduces words, concepts, plants and animals for further research.

The ending leaves room for futher adventures in a sequel -- or for the teacher to explore with the class. I found this book when looking for texts for a more advanced workshop that I teach. I would recommend it as part of a rainforest curriculum package.

I love these DeLorme "Atlas and Gazetteer" maps. We have one for Texas and found it very useful. We hope the Kentucky one will be just as informative. Includes all the little known roads not shown on standard highway maps...a true asset.
